Brussels youth at risk and mural artist, Joel Bergner, add colours to Brussels Midi railway station

Commissioned by Park Inn by Radisson, Joel Bergner – world renowned muralist, street artist and educator – creates, together with the youth at risk of Brussels, a mural on the façade of the Brussels Midi Railway Station. Socially engaged with its local community, the National Railway Company of Belgium kindly gave access to an important part of the main façade. The Belgian contribution of Park Inn’s international #AddColourToLives campaign is also supported by the communal authorities of Saint-Gilles with an objective to voice the sentiments of disadvantaged people, and help improve the communities where Park Inn by Radisson operates. The public disclosure of the street painting by Joel Bergner was held today in the presence of Eric de Neef, EVP & Chief Commercial Officer of the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group.

Park Inn by Radisson®, together with the communal authorities of Saint-Gilles, the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB/NMBS) and Joel Bergner are pleased to reveal a colourful painting on the Brussels Midi Railway Station façade. About a dozen young people from the ages 15 to 19 helped the artist, Joel Bergner, to conceptualize and create the Belgian contribution of this international campaign.

Youth at risk from Saint-Gilles were invited to first attend a workshop to explore social issues that are important to them, culminating in the design and painting of the public mural. Joel’s initiative is based on an approach that he calls Expressive Group Painting. This method prevents a simple filled in paint-by-numbers style, but challenges the youth to put their own thoughts and sentiments into art. A variety of creative expressions such as abstract paint splatters, drawings and poetry are then all combined into the main imagery of the mural, resulting in a work of art from the youth, for the youth.

The aim of his projects is simple – to give a voice to those who generally go unheard, i.e. street kids and vulnerable youth. They may be refugees or from underprivileged neighbourhoods. “Through public art, we want to give a platform to those voices that are rarely heard in society, to help them express and communicate their hopes, dreams, opinions, and feelings to the wider world”, says Joel Bergner. “Participants learn valuable life skills and form healthy bonds with the wider community, creating public art that gives them voice in a society that ignores or rejects them”.

Park Inn by Radisson’s #AddColourToLives will brighten up the future of the youth at five different locations. Launched in Malmö (Sweden) and London (United Kingdom), the project has now come to Brussels (Belgium), and will continue to spread its positive message in Cologne (Germany) and Cape Town (South Africa).  The efforts of Park Inn by Radisson for the underprivileged children all over the world continue through its dedicated Youth Career Initiative. As a lead partner, Park Inn by Radisson offers a six-month training and personal development programme to help bring stability to their lives.
